Founder – Late Dr. B.L. Maheshwari

Dr. B.L. Maheshwari was a man of many talents, prodigious intellect with strong character, integrity and idealism.A distinguished academician, researcher and a visionary leader, late Dr. B.L. Maheshwari founded COD and served as its principal executive from January 1980 to March 2000, and as Chairman of the Board of Governors and Professor Emeritus, from April 2000 to February 2009, Dr Maheshwari passed away on 1st March, 2009.

COD is the symbol of his lifelong dedication to the cause of management education and research. Dr. B.L. Maheshwari started his illustrious career at Alwar and Jaipur, after completing a Master’s degree in Political Science and Economics with top honours. In 1963, he went to the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, on Fulbright Fellowship where he completed MA and Ph.D. and returned to Jaipur in 1966. Thereafter, he moved to Hyderabad, in August 1967, where he joined as faculty of the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI). He worked there for almost 13 years and served in various positions such as Director of Research, Director of Management Development, and Editor, ASCI Journal of Management. He developed new programmes in management during that time such as ‘Management by Objectives’ and ‘Organization Planning and Design’.

In addition he has also published 10 books, over 100 articles and book reviews and produced an educational film on ‘Management by Objectives’ based on the experience of Madura Coats.

Dr. Maheshwari has been a consultant to a number of government and business organizations, including Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, Bharat Bijlee, Bharat Electronics, Blue Star, Crompton Greaves, Export-Import Bank of India, Governments of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, Hindustan Copper, Hindustan Zinc, Hyderabad Industries, Kerala Forest Department, Madura Coats, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam, Steel Authority of India, TELCO, UNICEF, Bangkok, Wockhardt Limited etc.

Awards received

Dr. Maheshwari received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Hyderabad Management Association in 2006. His name was included in the ninth to twelfth editions of Marquis Who’s Who in the World, Reference Asia (1992), Biography International (1993), Indo-American Who’s Who (1994) and Indo European Who’s Who (1995).
